The CBSE curriculum is delivered in carefully graded stages, so every year builds on the one before it. Below is what each class covers.

Early literacy and numeracy through structured activity and guided play.
Reading, writing and number work that prepare children for Class I.
Formal schooling begins, with reading fluency and written expression at the centre.
Consolidation of literacy and numeracy, with wider general knowledge.
Independent reading, structured writing and the beginnings of project work.
Subject learning deepens, with an emphasis on comprehension and reasoning.
Preparation for the middle school, with study skills taught explicitly.
Science and Social Science become separate disciplines; laboratory work begins.
Analytical thinking and written argument are developed across subjects.
The bridge to the secondary stage, with regular assessment and project work.
The two-year CBSE secondary course begins, with internal assessment throughout.
Board examination year, supported by practice papers and individual guidance.
The senior secondary course begins. Physics, Chemistry and Biology separate into full subjects with their own laboratory programmes.
Science stream only. Students choose either Mathematics or Biology as their fourth subject, or may take both.
Board examination year, with practical examinations, pre-board papers and individual guidance on entrance tests.
Science stream only. Subject combination continues from Class XI.
